AWARD CATEGORIES
The KOHLER Bold Design Awards is a design competition for hospitality, residential and commercial property professionals in Asia Pacific.
The competition serves as a platform to showcase tomorrow’s best talents in the field of design and innovation. A jury of renowned international designers will select the most outstanding projects. The winners will be announced during the gala awards ceremony in February 2022.

The Boldest
Living – Apartment living
This award recognises a creative contribution to residential design while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) in a private Condominium or Apartment.
Eligibility:
- A residential condominium or apartment development located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects, architects or developers to submit an architectural design or interior design project(s), located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Only Architectural design or Interior residential space of the apartment/condominium will be considered.
- Public spaces such as lift lobbies, reception, leisure facilities etc. within the apartment/condominium space will not be accepted.
- Submissions must include master plans/layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings (interiors and/or exteriors).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- All entries should be original creations. Copies and direct inspirations will be disqualified.
- Entry submissions will be judged on the appropriateness of the design solution, the successful integration of the elements of design and commercial viability.
- Conceptually and aesthetically, the project should be noteworthy in both the process and final result and should be an example of Asia Pacific (outside mainland China)’s distinctive design approach.
- Entry submissions will be assessed on their best use of space, overall aesthetics, functionality and originality.
- Entry submissions for Architectural Design and Interior Design will be judged separately so there will be two awards for this category. Developer of the winning Architectural project will also be awarded a trophy under both Architectural awards and the Interior Design awards.
- If the architect is also the interior designer for the project, two separate submissions (one for architecture and one for interior design) is required.
Living – Villa living
This award recognises a creative contribution to residential design while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) in a detached Villa or House.
Eligibility:
- Detached, privately owned house or villa located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects, architects or developers to submit an architectural or an interior design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Submissions must include master plans/layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings (interiors and/or exteriors).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.

Travel – Urban hotel
This award recognises a creative contribution to hospitality design in urban hotels, and a contribution to the advancement of guest experience and the hospitality industry, while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- Urban or city hotel complex located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) (4 star and above).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects, architects, developers, owners or operators to submit a design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Submissions must include master plans/layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings (interiors and/or exteriors).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.

- Public spaces such as leisure facilities, restaurant, spa etc. within the hotel space will not be accepted.

Travel – Resort
This award recognises a creative contribution to hospitality design in resorts, and a contribution to the advancement of guest experience and the hospitality industry, while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).

- Resort hotel or Resort Villa complex located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) (4 star and above).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects, architects, developers, owners or operators to submit a design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Submissions must include master plans/layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings (interiors and/or exteriors).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.

This award recognises a creative contribution to public spaces (e.g Restaurants, Bars , Hotel Restaurants & bars), while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- Standalone spaces (including interior fit-out) and restaurant & bar that are located within Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects or architects, developers, owners or operators to submit an interior design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Only the interior design of the space will be considered.
- Submissions must include interior layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings of the interior space.
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- All entries should be original creations. Copies and direct inspirations will be disqualified.
- Entry submissions will be judged on the appropriateness of the design solution, the successful integration of the elements of design and commercial viability.

Leisure – Retail store
This award recognises a creative contribution to public spaces (e.g Retail stores, Shopping malls, Spas), while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- Standalone spaces (including interior fit-out) and malls that are located within Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects or architects, developers, owners or operators to submit an interior design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Only the interior design of the space will be considered.
- Submissions must include interior layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings of the interior space.
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.

This award recognises a creative contribution to commercial places (eg.Airport, Library, Office building, Commercial building, Stadium, Parks, Theatres, Museums., etc), while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- Commercial building that are located within Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to architects, developers, owners or operators to submit an architectural project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Only the Architectural of the space will be considered.
- Submissions must include master plans/layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings (exteriors).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- All entries should be original creations. Copies and direct inspirations will be disqualified.

This award recognises a creative contribution to innovation places with creative outlook, new material used while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).

- Standalone spaces (including interior fit-out) and malls that are located within Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to architects, developers, owners or operators to submit an architectural project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Submissions must include master plans/layout plans, elevations, any other before and after images of the space with professionally shot pictures or 3D renderings (interiors and/or exteriors).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.

Sustainability
This award recognises the efforts to reduce ecological footprint, use zero waste and recycling by maximising resources, reducing waste products and taking advantage of reusable materials.
Eligibility:
- Standalone spaces (including interior fit-out) that are located within Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Must be a project that will be completed between 1st January 2019 and 31st August 2021.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects or architects, developers, owners or operators to submit an architectural or an interior design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- All entries should be original creations. Copies and direct inspirations will be disqualified.
- Entry submissions will be judged on the appropriateness of the design solution, the successful integration of sustainable elements of design.
- Conceptually and aesthetically, the project should be noteworthy in both the process and final result and should be an example of Asia Pacific (outside mainland China)’s distinctive design approach.
- Entry submissions will be assessed on their best use of sustainable elements within the space, overall aesthetics, functionality and originality.
- There will be one award for this category (Architectural or Interior design).
- Entry submissions for Architecture Design and Interior Design will be judged together. Developer of the winning project will also be awarded a trophy.
The Visionaries
Prodigies
This award recognises a new talent from the fields of architecture, interior design or interior architecture in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- Must be younger than 40 years old.
- Must be of Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) nationality.
- Open to students and currently practising professionals.
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- Demonstrates a distinctive approach to the process and outcome of completed projects or conceptual ideas in their portfolio and serves as an example of the future of Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) architecture and/or interior design.
- There will be one award for this category.
Influencers
This award recognises an influencer from the fields of architecture, interior design or interior architecture in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- This award recognises an influencer located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) that has contributed a significant advancement in sustainable design or creative use or application of new materials and/or technologies or creative restoration, rehabilitation or regeneration of an existing or historic structure which was previously being dismissed, while providing a leading example of distinctive design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Demonstrates a distinctive approach to the process and outcome of completed projects or conceptual ideas in their portfolio and serves as an example of an Influencer.
- Open to interior designers, interior architects or architects, developers, owners or operators to submit a design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- Demonstrates a distinctive approach to the process and outcome of completed projects or conceptual ideas in their portfolio, and serves as an example of the future of Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) architecture and/or interior design.
- There will be one award for this category.
The Icon
This award recognises an icon from the fields of architecture, interior design or interior architecture in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
Eligibility:
- This award recognises, accolades and applauds a noteworthy personality from the architecture and design community. Someone who is a legend in the field and is known for their tirelessness, ingenuity and noteworthy contributions to the industry in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- Open to interior designers, interior architects or architects, developers, owners or operators to submit a design project(s) that is located in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China).
- In the Philippines, this award is open to developers, hotel operators, interior design licensees and architecture licensees.
Selection criteria:
- Demonstrates a distinctive approach to the process and outcome of completed projects or conceptual ideas in their portfolio and serves as an example of the future of Asia Pacific (outside mainland China) architecture and/or interior design.
- There will be one award for this category.
Best of Best Projects
Cast your vote for the winner of “Best of Best Projects” for the KBDA Design Awards 2021.
This award is given by public voting for their favorite in any category.
Terms and Conditions:
- Each voter is entitled to vote for multiple projects once.
- “Best of Best projects” voting will open in December 2021.
- The winner of the KBDA “Best of Best Projects 2021” will be announced during the Gala Event in February 2022.
Judging Criteria
Judges will be focussing on these areas:
- Boldness in the designer’s / architect’s / developer’s choices
- Overall creativity, originality and imagination employed in the project’s realization
- Overall aesthetics of the space / building
- Usability and practicality of the design for the intended purpose
- Ability to impact and improve the standards of design in Asia Pacific (outside mainland China)
- Special consideration will be given to projects displaying experimentation / innovation, breaking with tradition and originality of the design outcome.
